How star formation depends on galaxy structure, impacts galaxy evolution through feedback, and can be properly modeled in simulations

Abstract

Star formation (SF) commences already with the formation of galaxies and

immediately affects their further evolution energetically and chemically

by stellar feedback processes.Since numerical simulations of galaxy

formation and evolution are still unable to spatially resolve either the

SF or the feedback processes, these have to be parameterized properly.

With respect to SF these parameters must mainly allow for that star are

formed in the coolest and densest phase of the interstellar medium,

while the stellar energy deposit must take the various radiative and

dynamical processes into account. Reasonably, the parameterizations

depend on the spatial and temporal resolution of the simulations and

must not be generalized but adapted accordingly.Approaching appropriate

parameter sets is presently in the focus of numerous explorations. But

how these depend on the evolutionary state of a galaxy and of the

location within the interstellar medium as well as on the temporal and

spatial conditions of simulations will be addressed in this talk.
