Member Feature: Giuseppe Castellano

We welcome our new member Giuseppe Castellano to the research network Data Science @ Uni Vienna

Why did you join the research network?

My work focuses on the digitization of collections at the Institute for Numismatics and Monetary History. I believe my work would benefit significantly from interaction and collaboration with colleagues for my current project, the Numismatic Central Card File Digitization Project.

How does your research or work relate to Data Science?

In my current role as Senior Scientist in Digital Numismatics at the Institute for Numismatics and Monetary History, I am responsible for maintaining our digital catalogue of coin auction catalogues as well as for maintaining and digitizing our collection of over 1 million index cards containing coin information. These cards will be digitized and published online using the principles of Linked Open Data so that researchers, students, and interested parties across the world will be able to access these remarkable numismatic resources.

How would you like to contribute to the community?

I am eager to collaborate and share my experience in the digital humanities with other colleagues across the university. Numismatics, and especially digital numismatics, is by nature an interdisciplinary topic and increased cross-disciplinary collaboration would be beneficial for all involved. I have many years of experience working to bridge the gap between more traditional humanistic approaches and modern digital methods, and am excited to continue doing so.
